The Story
I was living in my 10' by 10' office in Westwood Village when the unexpected happened. I received a call and within days I went from my very humble surroundings to residing in a 7,000 square foot mansion high in the hills above Los Angeles. I had no visible resources to make this happen nor did I seek it out. There in this house, high in the hills, I could see a city. I stretched out my hand…
It may be difficult to understand but, before moving to the house on the hill, I was content living in a state of simplicity. I had come to Los Angeles years earlier because I received another call. A call to be involved in music. The call was so powerful that it would not let go of me. So I moved to L.A. My intentions were good, my plan was to 'succeed' and once that happened I would of course give some of the credit to the one who brought me here. I did my best to find my own way in a city and industry where I had no contacts. I turned my full attention to the music industry. It became the object of my desire and affection…my idol. I worked hard to achieve success and to many it must have seemed that I succeeded. The cost was very high. I set aside my gifts as a singer/songwriter and sacrificed the relationships most precious to me. I allowed compromise and duplicity into my life. It became my mistress and I became the very thing I despised the most…a hypocrite.
There came for me a point of no return. I knew that if I did not turn around I would forever wear the mask that was my well-crafted disguise. So I made a call. I called the one who first brought me here. I wanted to know the truth. Why was I here? The answer was unexpected. Over the next few years I proceeded to lose everything… at least those things that represented the trappings of my success. Something else happened, I found what I really needed all along… intimacy with the One who had first called me to this city. The One who said "I know who you are, I have made you for a purpose, if you will trust me I will do exceedingly and abundantly beyond all you can hope or imagine." I thought my gifts were dead and buried, that I was broken beyond repair, and that I was spent beyond usefulness…until I heard a familiar still, small, voice asking me to pick up my instrument. Hesitantly I reached for my guitar, this time it was without preconceived ideas or a hidden agenda and with a heart inclined toward the One who brought me here. I played. I sang. I gave my best. The songs seemed to pour forth as if from an endless fountain...love Songs.
….From the house on the hill, below me, to the left, I could see Hollywood I had no love for this city. In fact, I once considered it the heart of darkness. Yet in obedience I extended my hand toward the city of Hollywood and read Isaiah 60. A miracle took place, my heart was transformed and I began to feel a passion and love for this city of Hollywood. I saw a vision of reclamation, of restoration, of revival. With my eyes I could see a rundown town, home to as many as 4000 runaways and throwaway children and the worldwide center for pornography. And yet with my spirit I could seethe beauty and the amazing value that was represented by what many would consider the unlovely who have made this their dwelling place. I am not only speaking about the runaways and the homeless but also the Hollywood moguls who had made the entertainment industry their idol. Exactly nine months later I would move into Hollywood. Placed, once again, high in the hills in a beautiful house. Many of the songs from this album were birthed there. I began to witness the miraculous. I performed a series of concerts at the Ivar Theater, the Met, The John Anson Ford Theater. Just as in the vision, my audiences were the homeless, runaways, often standing next to them were entertainment industry executives, producers, agents, engineers.
The greatest blessing was yet to come …just when I felt I had used up all my second chances at romance and love, the One who brought me here brought someone to me. She is amazing and beautiful, she is my soul mate. On May 30, 1998 she became my wife. What have I learned about the unexpected. I have learned that there is One who calls me, who saves me, who restores me. His promises are true and His love is boundless. He is waiting, He is ready and He is willing. His plan is for intimacy and for life more abundant. He gave his very best on a Cross to prove once and for all who. He is true love. He lives. His desire is that we present to Him the gifts that He has given to us. He is God. If we will humble ourselves and do this, then He promises to touch these gifts (our lives) and cause them to be beyond all we can hope or imagine.
Just when it appears all hope is lost there is a Way. Thank you Abba for the unexpected for your undying love, for your faithfulness, thank you for Jesus. I hope this project touches your heart.
